Highlights from the Week

  1. On June 22, 2023, the United States House of Representatives passed a House resolution that would condemn the use of elementary and secondary school facilities to provide shelter for aliens who are not admitted to the United States. This resolution was passed on a vote of 223 to 201 and, like the title states, it condemns schools that provide shelter for any non-U.S. nationals (or, “aliens” under federal law), who are not admitted into the country.   2. On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court brought down a decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard. This was a case centered around affirmative action that resulted in the ruling that race-based admissions adopted by Harvard and North Carolina University were unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.   3. On June 30, 2023, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled against President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan in the case Biden v. Nebraska. In a 6-3 vote, the court struck down the president’s plan to forgive up to $10,000 in student loans using the HEROES Act.
