A Republican Led and "The People" Still Survived

It is hard to understand why so many Americans can turn on America.

If there is one thing that Americans have brought to civilization it is government of the people, by the people and for the people. The beating heart of that gift to the world is an American election.

Zealous in its protection, every governor and election official, to a person, now defends their state’s guardianship of that gift.

Historically, its most challenged and ardent defender was a Republican.

When he was elected a great many of our citizens abandoned him and pressed their elected representatives to do likewise—and they did.

The action of those citizens cast a dark shadow over the growing free world Americans had given birth to. And in the end those citizens were responsible for over 600,000 American dead.

That Republican’s name was Abraham Lincoln.
